Technology has definitely come a long way. Gone are the days of using self-help books to learn new skills. With the likes of content creators that cover a wide spectrum of skill sets - from Primitive Technology’s wilderness survival techniques, to How To’s more domestic ways of creating anything from scratch - these channels have made YouTube the current go-to place for everything ‘how-to’.
Today, five Malaysian content creators who are enriching the lives of others through YouTube took center stage at the Generation YouTube (#GenYTMY) showcase: celebrity cook Ili Sulaiman of ‘Dish by Ili’, driving instructor Jerry Wong, arts and craft creator Ng Wai Yee a.k.a. SkyMagenta Craft, financial advisor Spark Liang, and real estate advisor Sean Tan of Iherng.

Google Earth Story: Coming Home to the Land of the Ancestors
For a very long time, the indigenous Temiar people of Kampung Cunex lived on their ancestral lands in the northern forests of Peninsular Malaysia. But in the 1970s, government policy and the communist insurgency saw them resettling away from their customary lands numerous times over the years.
In 2016, after five resettlements, the Temiar decided to return to their traditional homeland; not just to seek a better standard of living and to reclaim the autonomy they once enjoyed, but also to protect their ancestral forest and the sacred sites therein.
Temiar elder Anggah bin Itam takes us through the various places his community had been resettled into and explains why they have returned to Kampung Cunex.

Google Earth Story: Protecting the Rock Where The Sun Descended
The Temiar indigenous people of Kampung Cunex believe that in mythological times, whilst on their project to create the world, the Creator Spirit Aluej and the Sun descended and rested on their land.
Despite its beauty, they chose not to stay as they believe the Sun’s heat would scorch and destroy the area. They wanted the future inhabitants of the area to enjoy the place, and so they moved on and continued the creation of the world.
Temiar elder Long bin Uda recounts this legend and explains why his people have taken it upon themselves to protect this sacred place.

Over the years, there have been plenty in pop culture that has brought out the inner geek in all of us. The expanding audience appeal of blockbusters like Star Wars, games such as Fortnite, or popular comics from DC and Marvel have carved out a sector of YouTube where fans around the world express their love of all things fantastic and imaginative.
Malaysia’s purveyors of geek culture on YouTube took center stage today as four ‘GeekTubers’ shared their respective creative journeys at the Generation YouTube (#GenYTMY) showcase: Toy collector and hobbyist Awesome Toys TV; retro game enthusiast GamerZakh; gamer and voice dub aficionado Hamlet; and professional mobilegamer MrCocan. These fast-growing YouTubers shared their humble beginnings and the challenges they faced building up a following while sharing their unique passions with the world.
