South Africa's theft ridden avocado industry
Over the last decade, the demand for the nutrient-rich avocado has boomed globally. Avocados are berries and have the highest protein and oil content of any fruit. This ‘superfood’ that has greenish or yellowish flesh with a buttery consistency, is also called "green gold". But in South Africa's quiet tropical town of Tzaneen, the global boom has led to a scourge of avocado theft.

Worldview with Suhasini Haidar | What does US want from India on climate change?
US climate envoy John Kerry is in Delhi for a four-day visit to prepare for U.S. President Joseph Biden’s Climate Change Summit on April 22. During the visit, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the US would support India’s climate plans and facilitate access to green technologies and finance. Mr. Modi acknowledged that such cooperation would result in faster deployment of clean technologies.
There are many areas the US is pushing India: from moving to renewable energy to achieving net zero emission targets. But a lot has happened in the US-India equation in the last few years. Where will the two countries go from here on matters related to climate change?

Scientists develop ‘robo-plants’ to interact with plants
Scientists from #Singapore are closely working on ‘robo-plants’, an experiment they call a fusion of #nature and #technology. They attached electrodes to a Venus flytrap plant. The electrodes are film-like and soft and fit tightly to the plant's surface. These electrodes are capable of monitoring weak electrical pulses naturally emitted by plants.

Icelandic volcano's first eruption in 900 years
A volcano that spewed glowing red lava near Iceland’s capital Reykjavik after awakening for the first time in 900 years appeared to be subsiding, posing no danger to people, experts said.
Streams of red lava bubbled and flowed out of a fissure in a valley in Geldingadalur, close to Mount Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwestern Iceland.

Tackling the helium crisis in India
Helium is a colourless, odourless, tasteless, inert and a noble gas. The gas has been used in several applications apart from balloons. The United States is the most important exporter of helium across the world. But it is now planning to switch off export of helium from 2021. While Qatar is another possible exporter, acute political and diplomatic wrangles have made the country unreliable. This has created a crisis of obtaining helium in India.

Worldview with Suhasini Haidar | U.S-China meeting in Alaska
In this week's episode of Worldview, Diplomatic Affairs Editor Suhasini Haidar analyses what the high-level meeting between U.S. and China in Alaska means for the two countries, the world at large and India in particular.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met their Chinese counterparts Wang Yi and Yang Jiechi in Alaska, in the first face-to-face interaction between the Biden administration and China. The meeting was more acrimonious than expected, right from the start, while the press was still in the room.
Here are some points discussed in this video:
- What are the likely outcomes of this US-China clash?
- What does this mean for India?

Meet the lookalikes of political leaders
Lookalike artistes have often been active members in election campaigns. They dress up as eminent political leaders and are used by parties to canvass voters. However, the artistes feel that their offers have dwindled over the past few years. A major draw in campaigns, these artistes continue to perform because of the passion for the art form despite all odds.
