The benchmark indices tumbled in noon trading to end the day lower by nearly 2 per cent, making it four successive days of losses, due to selling in financial services and metal stocks. The BSE Sensex ended at 47,409.93, weaker by 937.66 points or 1.94 per cent and the NSE Nifty closed below the 14,000 mark at 13,967.50, down 271.40 points or 1.91 per cent. The broader markets also ended in the red, with the BSE Midcap index ending at 18,276.76, lower by 1.46 per cent and the BSE Smallcap index ending at 18,129.60, down 0.45 per cent. All the BSE sectoral indices ended in the red, with the exception of the FMCG index .

At least three cases have been lodged in Uttar Pradesh against the makers of the series, alleging inappropriate depiction of UP Police personnel and deities, and adverse portrayal of a character playing the role of prime minister. Similar cases have been lodged in other states including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, Delhi and Chandigarh.

Sourav Ganguly, former India captain and current Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, was taken to the Apollo Gleneagles Hospital in Kolkata after he complained of chest pain on Wednesday. Ganguly had undergone angioplasty earlier this month in Kolkata at the Woodlands Hospital. At the time of his discharge, doctors had said that a decision on more stents will be taken later. A nine-member medical board of the Woodlands Hospital had on January 4 concluded that angioplasty on Ganguly's other two coronary blockages, LAD and OM2, will be done at a later stage.

Farmers Protest: 300 policemen were injured in the clashes yesterday, according to the Delhi Police. Many of those are currently admitted at hospitals across Delhi. NDTV spoke with 32-year-old constable Sandeep Kumar who was at the ramparts of Red Fort when protesters hoisted a flag. Mr Kumar's hand was fractured in the violence. He says that as policemen, their job is to only protect people and that there was no aggression from their side. He said that many protesters behaved like hooligans and not farmers and this, he said, caused large-scale destruction.

Hasina Begum, a 65-year-old woman who was in a Pakistan jail, returned to India after 18 years. Hasina Begum had gone to Pakistan to meet her husband's relatives; however, she landed up in a Pakistan jail after she lost her passport. Longing for return to her country, Aurangabad Police in Maharashtra helped the woman. She was received by her relatives and police officials. "I want to thank Aurangabad police helping," said Hasina.
