New study wants to explore link between obesity and gum disease
A new study explores how the most common non-communicable diseases, Obesity and gum (periodontal) might be related to each other. It also highlights the effect of obesity on non-surgical periodontal care. The study was published in the 'British Dental Journal.' The connection between obesity and gum disease isn't as simple as cause-and-effect, said Andres Pinto, co-author of the study at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. Instead, the relationship centres on what both diseases have in common: inflammation. Examining a large number of existing studies, researchers found that data showing increased body mass index, waist circumference and percentage of body fat to be associated with an increased risk to develop gum disease, also known as periodontitis. Most studies analysed data from population subsets at one point in time, as opposed to studying the same population over a longer period. They concluded that changes in body chemistry affect metabolism, which, in turn, causes inflammation something present in both maladies.

Want development funds? Then join Congress: MP minister to people
A video surfaced, allegedly showing Home minister Bala Bachchan asking members of the Patil community in Jalagaon village of Barwani district to join Congress to get funds for a community hall. And that landed the Home minister in major controversy. While BJP demanded his resignation, Bachchan said that his words were being misconstrued and the footage was from a party meeting where he was addressing Congress workers. “We will not be fooled now. You take a call, join Congress first and then we will see. If you want I will come back after a couple of days. Make up your mind,” Bachchan is heard saying in the video. The Patil community had asked for Rs 50,000 to build a community hall, say sources. On the video, Bachchan is heard saying that he gave a lot of funds to the area as a legislator, but it did not translate into votes. “I have sanctioned Rs 50 crore for roads in booths where I got the lead. If you don’t vote for us and we keep doing everything for you, we are not such idiots. After all we are also answerable. Let us focus on where we got the lead.”
