I have dedicated my working life to public service and the fight for a better future. As a lawyer before being elected to Parliament , I fought for families trying to escape mould-infested accommodation. In Northern
Ireland, I helped the new
police service bring communities together after the Good Friday Agreement. And at the Crown Prosecution Service, I led efforts to lock up drug smugglers and al-Qaeda terrorists. But four years ago, I took on my biggest
Job yet when I was elected to lead the
Labour Party – which was the honour of my life. It was a daunting prospect. Just four months earlier, Labour had suffered its worst defeat since 1935. Right across Britain, working people looked at us and said: “No, not this time.” And they were right. We had totally lost sight of who we served. So, four years ago, I set myself a mission. Not just to make Labour competitive in
elections again but to return us to the service of Britain’s working people. The road I’ve taken has not always been smooth. And, a bit like being

Every fight I’ve had has been to make sure we never put working people in that position again. It’s why we have shown, time and again, that our commitment to
NATO and national security is rock-solid. It’s why we have ripped anti-Semitism in our party out by its roots. And it’s why, in contrast to the Tories, we understand that economic stability comes first during a cost-of-living crisis. These are changes that all mean we can now say to working people: “You can choose Labour and trust we have changed.” Not just a paint job but a total overhaul, from top to bottom. There is no doubt in my mind that these changes mean Labour can look forward to elections this year with confidence. Because in fact the real mission isn’t to change the Labour Party – that is just a necessary first step. No, our biggest cause is to change Britain, so that it once again serves working people, too. This is what we are campaigning for during the local elections. We have a plan that can turn the page on Tory decline, strengthen your community and get Britain’s future back. It’s a
Britain we can build together, where new homes, infrastructure and investment get our
economy growing again. Where working people have stronger rights that make work pay and guarantee dignity at work. Where a publicly owned energy company harnesses clean
British power, not foreign
Oil and gas. Where primary schools run free breakfast clubs and our children enjoy mental health support when they need it. Where we rescue our NHS by cutting the waiting lists and ending the 8am scramble at your GP surgery. Where we smash the criminal smuggling gangs, strengthen our borders and crack down on antisocial behaviour with 13,000 extra neighbourhood police. And where we all commit to rebuilding the fabric of our communities, with vibrant high streets, tough action on empty shops and better access to face-to-face banking. In short, a Britain where we back pride in every community and harness it for genuine national renewal. That is what we are fighting for – a Britain that serves you. And I won’t stop until you get it.
