The new films on Sky Cinema in April, including Oppenheimer and drama with 98% on Rotten Tomatoes

This all-new Sky Original animation follows the life of Beckett (Mo Gilligan), a pampered and selfish cat who totally takes for granted the lucky hand he has been dealt. But all of that is about to change when he carelessly loses his ninth life and embarks on a journey that sees him turn from a gloriously self-absorbed pet to a self-sacrificing hero. 10 Lives boasts an all-star voice cast including Bill Nighy and One Direction’s Zayn Malik. 10 Lives premieres on April 5. Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate When Megamind’s former villain team returns, he must assemble his Friends to stop Metro City being launched to the moon This animated sequel picks up mere moments after the events of its 2010 predecessor, as Megamind’s former villain team, The Doom Syndicate, returns to Metro City with a nefarious plan to launch the entire city to the Moon. To thwart the plan, Megamind (Keith Ferguson) must keep up his evil pretences while assembling his own heroic team. The star-studded supporting cast includes 30 Rock’s Scott Adsit, Veep’s Tony Hale and singer Adam Lambert. Megamind vs The Doom Syndicate premieres on April 12. This movie was arguably one of the most talked about films last year and became the third-highest grossing film of 2023. Directed by Oscar winner Christopher Nolan, the biographical drama recalls the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the American physicist known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb”. Oppenheimer premieres on April 12. Sumotherhood This British action-comedy featuers several big name cameos from the likes of Jennifer Saunders, Ed Sheeran and Jeremy Corbyn Written and directed by Kidulthood star Adam Deacon, this action-comedy follows two wannabe gangsters (Deacon and Jazzie Zonzolo) as they try to rob a megastar and hold up a local bank. But when things don’t go according to plan, a misunderstanding leads them into business with one of East London’s most notorious gangs. Sumotherhood premieres on April 13. Spoiler Alert The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons fronts this romantic drama The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons stars in this heartfelt, romantic tale based on Michael Ausiello’ bestselling memoir of the same name. Also starring Our Girl’s Ben Aldridge and Mrs Doubtfire’s Sally Field, it follows an emotionally repressed journalist who meets the love of his life and finds happiness, only to have it snatched away by terminal illness. Spoiler Alert premieres on April 14. Blackberry This biographical dramedy is inspired by the rise and fall of the BlackBerry smartphone Achieving a near-perfect 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes score is no easy feat, but this comedy-drama exploring the rise and fall of the world’s first smartphone has managed to do so. The film centres around Canadian tech company Research in Motion and the “true story” of how its BlackBerry phones came-to-be, all while highlighting the ruthless nature of Silicon Valley. Starring This is the End’s Jay Baruchel and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Glenn Howerton, Blackberry is a hilariously frenetic, whirlwind ride through a ruthlessly competitive Silicon Valley at breakneck speeds. Blackberry premieres on April 19. Strays An abandoned dog teams with other strays to get revenge on the owner who ditched him in this comedy Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx are talking dogs in this outlandish comedy that follows abandoned pup Reggie (Ferrell). Poor Reggie thought he and his owner (Will Forte) were playing an innocent game of fetch, that is until he meets streetwise stray Bug (Foxx) and realises his master intentionally abandoned him in the big city. With two more pooches adding fuel to his fire, Reggie goes from cute to cunning as he and Bug concoct a scheme to get back to Doug and give him a big bite between his legs. The film follows Kennedy in the days before and immediately after the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy, in November 1963. Portman’s portrayal was praised by critics, earning her a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. Jacke also stars Peter Sarsgaard as Robert “Bobby” Kennedy alongside Greta Gerwig, Richard E. Grant and John Hurt in the latter’s final film released before his death. Jackie premieres April 20. The Warriors This intense and stylised film from director Walter Hill has become a cult classic This 1979 action-thriller is based on Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name and is now – 45 years since its release – considered a cult classic. Adapted by Walter Hill, the film focuses on a turf battle that breaks out between street gangs in New York City as the Riffs gang fight to travel from the Bronx to their home turf on Coney Island after being framed for murder. The Warriors is available now.
