Merseyside will remember one of the region's true icons today as it marks a year since the death of Paul O'Grady. The star died at his home in Kent aged 67 on March 28, 2023 from sudden cardiac arryhtmia. People across the
UK were in mourning after the shock news as many paid tribute to an entertainer who left his mark on so many. The TV legend was a trailblazer in the industry, who shot to fame as Lily Savage and later became renowned for his self titled talk show and animal welfare programmes. Paul remained fiercely proud of his Merseyside roots throughout his life as he had a passion for social justice that meant he always used his voice to fight for important causes close to his heart such as animal rights and LGBTQ+ equality. The legendary entertainer was always an incredible ambassador for the region and this was recognised in the most fitting way when he was given 's highest honour after his death. awarded Paul with the Freedom of the Borough in July last year as he was branded . Paul's impact on Merseyside will always be remembered and his image now features in one of the region's most prominent positions on the banks of the Mersey. The mural is emblazoned on the Woodside Ferry Terminal and features Paul's face as well as his iconic drag persona, Lily Savage, on a leopard print background. The mural was commissioned by Peel L&P and was created by Wirral artist, . He said in June last year: "He’s a local hero really and it’s just a nice thing to do to honour him." Paul was renowned as an animal lover and his final gift to the city was a generous £20,000 donation to rescue centre, . People across the region paid tribute to Paul's passion for animals on the day of his funeral last April. and broke out in a cover of 'Who Let the Dogs Out' in celebration of his life. Paul's funeral took place in Aldington Kent, where he lived for over 20 years. Although he settled down South, Paul never forgot his Merseyside roots and people across our region will never forget the contribution he made to our society during his life.
