New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day. There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue. You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow. What Is Today’s Strands Hint? Scroll slowly! GENRES Here’s where the Spangram is on the grid: Today's Spangram Once you find the Spangram it’s typically pretty easy to find the rest of the day’s words, but I had trouble with a couple of these. Here’s the full list: Today's Strands This one was surprisingly easy compared to the last few days. The Spangram itself is rather short and straightforward. I was expecting something more elaborate, like SCIENCEFICTION since we know that a Spangram can actually be two words now. I suppose the theme this time around is much more straightforward and far less cryptic than other days as well. I stumbled on biography almost instantly, and then fantasy was super obvious, and romance right after that. At this point, with the top third of the grid blocked off, I knew the Spangram had to go horizontally and lo and behold, there was genres, cutting the board in twain. It’s funny because once I’d guessed the first couple words I was going to use “genre” as my hint for this post, but then it was the Spangram! I snagged mystery next—not much of a mystery, that one!—and then fiction. All I had left was romance, which is funny because that’s the one thing I don’t have left in the real world.
