Airlines including Ryanair and TUI have started to send passengers flying out of Palma Airport in Majorca this week, urging them to arrive up to three hours before their flight, as a result of industrial action, which is set to last until this Sunday. The travel hub sees 30 million people pass through its doors annually, making it one of the busiest in the country. Starting on Friday, March 22, security screening workers at Son Sant Joan Airport have walked out to protest pay and working conditions. According to the travel hub's website, this unannounced “work-to-rule” strike by employer Trablisa has sparked disruption security checkpoints with long delays experienced by passengers. We recommend that you factor in additional time for security checks when arriving at the airport. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding." Not only has strike action prolonged waiting times, but this disruption is said to have caused turmoil among passengers, with the Mallorca Daily Bulletin reporting breakouts of "scuffles" as well as fainting spells among those waiting. The local publication adds that claims against airlines from checked-in passengers who missed flights have "surged".
