The ITV breakfast show aired a news report on 'Kate Garraway: Derek's Story' on Tuesday's show which highlighted the high costs of his care which was £16,000 a month. Opening the show Susanna Reid said: "Shining a spotlight on the care system, Kate Garraway shares the final year of her husband Derek Draper's life in a new documentary tonight and reveals the devastating emotional and financial consequences of caring for a loved one." However, other carers watching the show were left enraged as they felt Kate's story was not truly representative of their own tough realities and took to X to air their fury. Kate Garraway has been slammed by other unpaid carers for saying Derek's £16k a month care costs had left her in debt (Image: ITV) @DavidFoxon2 wrote: "She earns appox £60,000 monthly! What costs £4,000 a week, if she is the unpaid carer?" @BiBetty3 fumed:" People have been telling their stories about unpaid carers for years... They have been ignored. A GMB presenter becomes a carer... 'We shine a spotlight on unpaid carers'. Why weren't our voices enough??? #GMB." @Collider74 penned: "While I value the spotlight the story casts on underpaid caregivers, it's challenging to find sympathy, considering a net worth of £1.5 million and an annual income of £544,000 (source: The Mirror), especially when numerous individuals are facing significant hardships." @_____E_L_E_____ added: "So £16 grand per month for Derek tells me Kate did absolutely f*** all for this guy. I'm a care worker and we charge £25 an hour for 2 carers. 4 x visits a day for a month £3100 a month. I'm sick of hearing about Kate's woes. #gmb." However @CarerJim sympathised as he wrote: "I’m terribly sorry for your loss Kate, that’s so expensive it’s awful, I hope you’ll forgive me but this could and should be used to highlight the fact of what unpaid carers do vs what we get, how much money we save the government, and the fact we’re paid only £307 a month." Meanwhile @whipps2000 believes that the programme may do some good as she said: "If the documentary highlights how the care system is broken, then l am all for it. "l work as a community nurse and visit patients like Derek everyday , some aren’t so lucky to have family living with them, and it breaks my heart when l have to leave them." The Good Morning Britain report, which aired just after 6am on Tuesday, was featured in every other news bulletin throughout the show and specifically highlighted the cost of care offering statistics and figures from across the country. The documentary follows Derek's heart BREAKING final year (Image: ITV) It also stated there could be up to 10.6 million unpaid carers across the country with almost half of them cutting back on essential items including food and heating. In the documentary, which aired on ITV on Tuesday night, Kate explained: "Derek's care costs more than my salary from ITV and that's before you pay for a mortgage, before you pay for any household bills, before you pay for anything for the kids. Top showbiz news Kate and William issue new statement Fergie forced to sell Queen's gift Ralf Little confirms replacement Kate Garraway hospitalised "So we're at a crunch point. I am in debt and I can't earn enough money to cover my debt because I'm managing Derek's care. "And I can't even use the money I do have to support Derek's recovery because it's going on the basics all the time." She added: "I'm not going to pretend that I'm poorly paid, I have an incredible Job that I love which is well paid, but it's not enough."
