James Bond villain insists it's an important message that must be heard. , 72, takes on the role of Rafuel Lowy in Bardejov, a dramatic Second World War film inspired by a true story that focuses on
Holocaust survivor Emil A. Fish's tale. The native of Bardejov in Slovakia was nine years old when he and his family in the region were sent to a concentration camp. The follows Davi's character, who is a rabbi and winemaker, in 1942. After the females in the area are ordered to be shipped to work in a shoe factory, the streets erupt with chaos and Lowy soon discovers there is no factory and the girls are actually being transported to Auschwitz. Lowy, with the help of other men in the village, is forced into desperate action as they try to save the girls. Speaking to the Mirror about the haunting true story, Davi said: "I wanted to do something that was not your typical genre film, but something that had a punch to it and had historical significance. It's a very honest story. It's tremendously authentic. I want [the audience] to understand that how, on the precipice of what happened back then to right now today, it could happen any time." Expanding on his role, Davi continued: "My character is a defiant character. I did a lot of historical research with the help of Fish. Lowy's character is the force of nature. At first, he was so defiant. He has got to convince the people to come along with his plan. With courage, you need people to have leadership and you need people that are not afraid to speak the truth." The film benefits from the invaluable insights of Holocaust survivor Fish, now 88, who lends his expertise as a producer on the project. Touching on the importance of this connection, Davi added: "So many times you see a film about the Holocaust and the Jewish become victims. It's downtrodden and victimized. There was a key to my character. Emile developed a good script. The research that Emile has done, he knows everything about the events. I don't care if you're Jewish, you're Scottish or English or you know, Italian, you're going to be affected by the story. "Emile has a Wall of Remembrance in bodywork for those family members and those people [from Bardejov who were killed]. He did not want this town that he loved and he grew up in to [be forgotten]. Slovakia is beautiful country." Bardejov is directed by Danny A. Abeckaser, the man behind The Engineer and Inside Man, and is set for release in the US on March 19.
