UK. It may have lost that title to a
London Brewdog in 2022, but it's still pretty large. If you fancy a change of pace – to see what life is like on the other side of the scale – why not check out one of the smallest pubs in Britain. Just 40 minutes away by road or train, The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds was once confirmed to be the smallest pub in Britain by the Guinness Book of Records – though this has now been challenged by others. The minuscule pub with a bar measuring just 15ft by 7ft, The Nutshell has been serving customers since 1867. You'll have to get pretty cosy with fellow customers though, since not many people can fit inside. One of these is a mummified black cat, believed to be around 400 years old. There are plenty of other things to do while you're in Bury. There's the Abbey Gardens, which include formal flower beds, a water garden, and 400 rose bushes in the Appleby Rose Garden. Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (Image: Warren Gunn) For history buffs, the ruins of the Abbey of St Edmund are a must-visit, as is St Edmundsbury Cathedral which boasts a vaulted ceiling. You can also take a brewery tour at Greene King, which has been brewing beer in Bury for more than 200 years – before becoming a chain with more than 3,000 pubs and bars across the country. National Trust fans can visit Ickworth House and Gardens, which is four miles outside the town. The Italian-style manor house is set within acres of
Parkland perfect for a long walk. The Bury St Edmunds Food & Drink Festival is also coming up, on August 27 and 28.
