The Easter Road speed merchant hasn’t kicked a competitive ball since a knee injury picked up against St Mirren last October put the brakes on his season in the cruellest of fashions. What was thought to be a meniscus tear was discovered to be a ruptured cruciate ligament just days before the World Cup was due to start and with Boyle in position in Qatar dreaming of lighting up football’s greatest show on earth. A complete knee reconstruction followed which meant the Hibs’ faithful were deprived of seeing their star man for the remainder of the season as Lee Johnson ’s side rode a rollercoaster of form before finally clinching the final Euro slot. That secured a return to competitive action next Thursday in Leith in the Conference League second qualifying round. And Boyle is desperate to be involved. And the winger said: “The knee feels good. It’s just about building it up. But in terms of fitness tests and stuff like that I’m ready to compete. I’ve been training full time since before Marbella. “The European game? It’s not up to me but I’ve been training and I feel good. It’s important for me to get minutes under my belt before that but like I say if it’s building up minutes into those games then I would like to think I’d be ready if called upon. “I was getting told ‘you need to be patient with it’ and I was thinking the body feels good, the knee feels good .. but then you still have to remain patient. It’s difficult. I want minutes under my belt but even just to be back in full training with full contact has been important for myself. Hopefully I will be ready.” Boyle was only 12 games into his Easter Road return after a short spell in the Saudi Pro League when injury halted what had been a typically fast start to the season for the winger that saw him hit an injury time equaliser against Hearts just minutes after climbing off the bench for his second Hibs debut. He said: “Last season was really difficult. It started like a house on fire then the World Cup was on the horizon and I was playing well. But then injury hit. I tried to make the World Cup, tried to grind through it. But the diagnosis was worse than what we originally thought. I was going to Qatar. I was on the flight. I thought it was just a meniscus tear and I could get through it with a few injections. “But further down the line and with more investigations it just didn’t feel right. Luckily enough the facilities in Qatar helped get to the bottom of it and the surgeon had to make that call.” (Image: FIFA via Getty Images) It’s no wonder the speed demon is desperate to make up for lost time for club and country in the coming campaign. Third place is the target for Hibs as well as a run in the cups and Europe. And Boyle said: “That’s always been the aim. We have to be competing. We’ve done some transfer business quite early and the boys are gelling well. “First and foremost we need to start well in the European game and the first few games in the league. We need to be much more consistent this year. But we have much more strength in depth in the squad this time. We’ve got good youngsters who could make the breakthrough as well. It’s looking good. “I’m hoping to be back in the Australia squad yeah. Most importantly for me is getting back playing for Hibs. You don’t just walk into the international side. There’s big games for them coming up in October against England at Wembley and the Asia Cup’s in January. I need to be performing for Hibs and hopefully I can get back into that set-up.” Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks. Or by navigating to the user icon in the top right.
